Woodway Support British Army Reunion

Woodway UK have provided clothing and equipment to enable 10 former members of the Irish Guards to reunite in an epic motorbike adventure across southern Morocco.

The inaugural Blackthorn Rally was organised by former Colonel Ben Farrell, MBE who approached Woodway UK for support. “Woodway kindly provided us with shirts, caps and vitally water camel packs which kept us hydrated on our journey.”

Jason Inwood, MD of Woodway UK explains, “We have worked closely with Ben in his present role at John Lewis and he approached us to support a motorbike rally to re-unite veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan together. We were happy we could help by providing some of the equipment required for the journey.”

The route they took followed the old Dakar Rally route and took them seven days to complete. They rode 1600km over the Sahara Desert and the Atlas mountains including three mountain passes of over 2000m. Two of the men followed them in a 4x4 with supplies of soft drinks and chocolate bars as well as spare bike parts and tyres.

Ben Farrell says, “The biggest challenge was riding through the desert sand which was very deep in places with the added obstacle of steep dunes. One of the men hadn’t even ridden off road before so this was quite an introduction. Another hurt his arm but he carried on riding for 3 days before he returned home and discovered he needed a cast as it was broken.”

“We are so grateful to Woodway for supporting this adventure. It enabled veterans to re-group and spend quality time together; reminiscing, remembering our lost colleagues and creating new memories which will last forever. We are already planning our next trip with many who couldn’t make it this time signing up for next year and we hope to make this an annual event.”
